Double Bay Marina’s early history…

In 1910 on this site a fixed jetty area existed to service boats and supplies. In 1936 Charles Messenger purchased the land and extended the jetty area which was leased from the Maritime Services authority. In 1944 he leased the cottage and business to Mr. Ireland and in 1948 the Messenger family took over the cottage and business and by 1963 the facility consisted of berthing, 72 swing moorings, a harbourside workshop and slipway.

In 1983 a group comprising some of the current shareholders incorporated Double Bay Marina Pty Ltd which acquired the freehold and the adjacent marina facilities. At that time the whole area was in a very dilapidated condition. All the existing structures were demolished and a major refurbishment carried out including the extension of the marina, the construction of an office, workshop, toilets, and private residence.

At the time of this re-development, the new owners relinquished 47 moorings to reduce congestion in the bay. Unique to Sydney at that time the company was structured so that shares that were issued to the new shareholders entitled them to in an interest in individual nominated marina berths.

In 2021 the property was subdivided, the residential land sold and the onshore facilities rebuilt to incorporate additional rubbish storage, new bathroom, storage facilities, office and board room.
