Proposed Upgrade Double Bay Marina

Double Bay Marina Seeks Approval to Upgrade Marina

On Friday 14 December 2007 Double Bay Marina submitted a Development Application (DA) and Environmental Impact Statement to Woollahra Council to upgrade the existing marina. The proposed upgrade involves replacing the fixed timber structure with a new floating structure to meet current operational needs. It is anticipated that Woollahra Council will advertise the DA and place it on public exhibition mid January 2008 for community feedback.

Currently the marina caters for 40 vessels ranging in size from 8 metres to 15.5 metres in length moored at the timber Jetty and 25 swing moorings. It is proposed to replace the existing jetty with a new floating structure containing 51berths for the permanent mooring of vessels and retain 14 swing moorings. The maximum vessel length of 15.5 metres is retained in the proposal.

Double Bay Marina undertook a range of community consultation activities to assist it in developing and refining its proposal to upgrade the marina. The proposal submitted to council has considered the community feedback that identified the issues the community considered important in maintaining the character of the bay and protecting the local environment.

The original proposal presented to the community included 65 vessels, up to 20m in length and no swing moorings. The DA submitted to council proposes 51 fixed moorings and 14 swing moorings, with vessel size to be maintained at 15.5 metres.

Andrew Lygo the Manager of Double Bay Marina believes “The new facility will be a vast improvement with the floating structure providing both operational and safety benefits. Given the condition of the current timber structure something has to be done and this proposal addresses many of the concerns of both the users and the residents”.
